Peanut Butter and Banana Pupsicles

Looking for a way to help your dog beat the heat this summer?

This frosty recipe is a great way to reward your loyal pup!

Warningit does melt fast, but your dog is faster!

Oh! Did I mention that it only takes 3 ingredients?!

And they are ingredients you likely already have in your house; a banana, peanut butter, and plain yogurt.

They are quick and easy to make – the time they take to freeze is the longest part of making these pupsicles.

Begin by mashing one ripe banana, then combine the yogurt and peanut butter so the mixture is a smooth, even consistency.

There are some really cute dog paw or dog bone forms out there, however you can also use an ice cube tray to form the treats if you don’t have anything fancy to use.

Fill the forms to the top, trying to minimize any air bubbles in the batter.

Place in the freezer for 2 hours or until fully frozen.

And let the treat-earning-tricks begin!

The first time my dogs tried this recipe, they took a few slow licks before digging in – and the treats disappeared like magic!

As with all snacks, I don’t recommend giving your dog more than one or two per day because they still will make your pup chubby even though they are homemade.

Banana Oatmeal Dog Treats

Here is another favourite homemade dog treat recipe – rated 10/10 by my dogs!

It is so fast and easy to whip up a quick batch, and BOY does it make for some happy pups!

I personally love recipes that have simple ingredients that I typically have on hand, rather than having to make a special trip to the grocery store.

Advertisements
Advertisements

These treats only take banana, peanut butter, yogurt, egg, and raw oatmeal.

Start by mixing the wet ingredients into an even consistency (smoothing any out any lumps in the batter).

The riper the banana is, the easier it is to get a nice creamy consistency without lumps (frozen bananas work well, too)!

Advertisements

Then add the raw oatmeal and mix.

The consistency should be dry enough that it is easy to work into balls with your hands, but not so dry that it crumbles apart.

If you have a cute cookie cutter, you can roll the dough out and cut into shapes.

For a faster option with less clean-up, I usually form the treats into balls by hand (about the size of golf balls).

Advertisements

Bake at 350º for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool fully and let your pup enjoy the tasty treat!

As with any treat, you don’t want to give your dog too many at a time; I don’t give my dogs more than one or two of these a day.

And of course they have to do a trick to earn their treat!

PRO TIP: I feed these treats outside as they tend to crumble while being eaten.

Sweet Potato Chews

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

Pet stores have loads of different treats to choose from, but are they all healthy for your pup?

Probably not.

In fact, there are a lot of snack options I would not want to feed my dogs.

I personally like to know what goes into the food that I eat, so why should it be any different for my dogs?

Advertisements
Advertisements

Homemade treats are not only easy to make, but they also give me a feeling of pampering my dogs a bit more than if I had just gone out and bought a tasty snack for them.

These sweet potato chews are the veggie alternative to rawhide – and the dogs LOVE them!

PSA – just because they are a vegetable doesn’t mean you should feed your dog more than one or two per day; they will still make Fido chubby if he has too many treats!

So just how do you go about making these yummy chews for your dog?

Easy!

Advertisements
Advertisements

Simply slice the sweet potato into thin strips, then place in the food dehydrator at 140º F for 4 hours.

Advertisements
Advertisements

If you do not have a food dehydrator, you can bake them at 250º for 3 hours.

You can peel them, however I usually leave the peel on and the dogs eat the whole treat.

If you have more than one dog, you may need to keep an eye on the one who tends to be the “treat snatcher” like Lady is!

Poor Zeus has lost his fair share of treats to her when my back was turned.

MEET THE SCHNAUZERS! ~ZEUS

Oh boy… Where do I start with this HUGE personality? Zeus is a big ham – when I don’t have a camera out, anyway. As soon as Zeus sees the camera he gets all shy, like an out-going kid who never takes a good picture…

He loves to be the center of attention when we have company and will do anything to get as many snacks and snuggles as he can. Oh, but not long snuggles… There are so many things to do and places to patrol.

Advertisements
Advertisements

First thing in the morning, he needs to do his patrol around our property when he goes outside… His rounds are almost always the same; pee on mom’s driver-side tire (to make sure no other dogs try getting chummy), proceed in a clockwise manner around the house and pee on the tree, then the other bush, then come back to the front step when finished.

Advertisements
Advertisements

OH! And barking at the cat is MANDITORY any time that slinky feline may be anywhere within earshot… Because cats are totally the worst.

Zeus is a happy-go-lucky, sometimes shenanigans-causing, wet-nosed teddy bear. Have you ever tried giving a haircut to an unwilling, wiggly little critter only to have them sheepishly act like they didn’t mean to make it take 3 times as long once they’re done..? Yeah, they know you can’t stay mad.

Advertisements

Favorite treat? FOOD! Any kind of food will go over quite well… Except maybe veggies, one wouldn’t want to be too healthy. Although, for as much as Zeus likes his treats, Lady is often smart enough to pull off stealing his treat and still getting her own if I don’t catch her scheme in time.

Advertisements
Advertisements

Funny Quirk? The first endearing trait that jumps to my mind isn’t really a quirk… It is the gentle way that Zeus plays with his pups, rolling onto his back and letting them climb all over him, tugging at his ears. He will pounce playfully toward them and then they playfully mimic the pounce back at him.

Meet the Schnauzers! – Bianca

Bianca 1

Bianca is my extremely loyal, snuggly, and often quite serious gal. She is 100% my dog – and no-one else’s! Which isn’t to say she doesn’t like other people; quite the opposite. She LOVES when we have company and she can get unlimited attention, however if there is a tiny chance she could be on my lap instead, you better believe she will be!

Advertisements
Advertisements

That is my take on this breed; friendly to pretty well anyone, however they know who their family is and home is where the heart is. And home for them is wherever you are – including camping, fishing, and kayaking!

Advertisements
Advertisements

Side note… if you plan to take your pup kayak fishing like I do, I STRONGLY recommend getting them a doggie life jacket. Oh, and plan to be a good multi-tasker the first time you catch a fish when they are with you. The first time this happened with Bianca in my kayak she tried jumping out to catch the fish for me as I was trying to land it! What can I say; she was a little over-zealous… until she got used to the fishing and decided to take a nap instead.

Advertisements
Advertisements

Her funny quirk? She has one ear that stands straight up and the other than sometimes flops over in the cutest way. OH! And she knows how to “dance” on her back legs in a circle to earn treats.

Advertisements
Advertisements

Favourite Treat? So far, it is DEFINITELY my homemade pumpkin dog treats! To be honest, I was tempted to try it because it smelled soooo good when I was making it; maybe I will with the next batch!

Meet the Schnauzers! Lady

I will start working on introductions for my 3 Mini Schnauzers between puppy cuddles from our current litter…

Advertisements
Advertisements

Lady is our gorgeous tri-colored female with tones ranging from black, grey, and white. And I can guess what you are all thinking – are her eyelashes Photoshopped?? Nope. Not even a bit. I find it slightly amusing that my dog has eyelashes that put mine to shame, even with mascara!

Advertisements
Advertisements

She is a very friendly, people dog. If given the opportunity, she would go everywhere with me! Her puppies have all been very outgoing little guys who are far from shy.

As soon as I sit on the couch, she is snuggled in next to me – or more accurately, on top of me with her chin on my shoulder!

Funny quirk? If she sees me watching her eat or drink, she starts wagging her tail. Don’t ask me why – maybe she thinks she is doing a good job of eating or drinking or something. Still an endearing quirk.

-Ellie
